A New Pavilion at Zlíchov More Than Doubles a School Prague Has Too Few Of

The city has completed the new pavilion at the primary school for pupils with specific behavioural disorders at Zlíchov. Capacity at the first stage rises from 50 pupils to 120 — the school more than doubles — and the new building is fully barrier-free. Praha 5 announced the completion on 9 September; the investor is the City of Prague, not the district.

The number is the story. This is a specialised school, teaching children with ADHD, autism, emotional difficulties and other social difficulties through individually adapted provision. Places of that kind are scarce in Prague and demand for them is high, which the city gives as its reason for the expansion. Seventy additional places at one school is a large proportional change to a small stock.

What the building actually adds

Two things in the new pavilion were previously absent rather than merely inadequate. It is fully barrier-free, which the first-stage building was not, so accessibility improves for pupils, staff and visitors alike. And it contains a gym for pupils of both stages — the school had none, meaning physical education and other movement activities had no proper home at all. The pavilion also holds school workshops.

For a school whose pupils are taught in small groups with individual support, a gym is not a recreational extra. It is the room where a class can move without leaving the site.

The stages that follow

The pavilion is described as the first significant part of a longer project to expand and gradually modernise the whole campus, and the next stage begins now. The city is starting the reconstruction of the first-stage building, which is to gain specialist classrooms and modern counselling rooms for children with specific behavioural disorders, along with further support space.

The two buildings will then be joined at the corresponding floors by a connecting link. That link does double duty: it ties the school together internally, and it carries barrier-free access into the older building, which acquires it by connection rather than by being rebuilt around it. A later stage is to add a new outdoor playground.

Two things the announcement does not give are worth naming. There is no cost figure for the pavilion and no date for the stages still to come — neither the reconstruction now beginning nor the playground. A completed building with a stated capacity and an unstated price is a partial account, and the parts that are missing are the ones that would let anyone judge whether the rest of the campus follows on the schedule implied here.

What is not in doubt is what opened. The pavilion is finished, the places are real, and a school that could take fifty children at its first stage can now take a hundred and twenty.
