Prague Will Host the 2032 World Congress of Architects, at a Cost of EUR 870,000

Prague's city councillors voted on 2 September to host the 2032 world congress of the International Union of Architects, on the basis of a successful candidacy brokered by the Czech Obec architektů. The city will pay the UIA a total of EUR 870,000 — about CZK 21 million — in annual instalments running to 2032.

The money buys more than a conference. Hosting the congress carries with it the right to use the title World Capital of Architecture, which is the part of the arrangement the approved council document leads with:

Hosting the congress is connected with obtaining the title, which represents a significant opportunity for the international presentation of the city and of its architectural, cultural and urbanistic heritage.

What the congress is

The UIA has held the congress every three years since 1948. The union itself was founded in that same year in Switzerland, associates non-governmental organisations from more than 120 countries, and has its seat in Paris. Prague's only previous turn was in 1967, so the 2032 congress falls sixty-five years after the last one.

The part worth watching

An expenditure spread in instalments over six years is a small line in the city's budget, and the title is a reputational asset rather than a building. What makes the decision worth recording is the date it fixes. The city has now bound itself to a year in which several thousand architects will arrive to look at Prague — and 2032 is far enough out that the schemes currently in preparation across the city are precisely the ones that will or will not be standing by then.

Prague has committed the fee. What the council document as reported does not contain is a programme: no exhibition, no venue, no accompanying works are named in it, and nothing in the decision says who will decide those.
