Three Town Halls Force the Roztocká Lane Closure to End — and Are Told the Street Will Be Dug Up Again

The councils of Prague 6, Suchdol and Roztoky have stopped a roadworks extension that would have kept one of the city's northern approaches at half capacity into October. Zdopravy.cz reports that full traffic across the whole carriageway on Roztocká and Kamýcká returns on Sunday 6 September.

What was on the table

The rebuild of a wastewater pumping station on Roztocká required cutting the street from four lanes to two. The closure was scheduled to end with the school holidays. The investor, Pražská vodohospodářská společnost, then asked to keep its occupation of the carriageway until the end of September.

That is the request the three town halls refused. Their argument was timing rather than principle: a four-lane approach reduced to two, on the route into the city from Suchdol and Roztoky, at the start of the school year. The councils warned of traffic collapse.

What they got, and what they did not

They got the September date reversed and traffic restored on 6 September. They did not get the works finished. The pumping station rebuild remains incomplete, and the contractor is now working out with the traffic engineering designer how to fit the remaining work in before the end of the year.

Because the reconstruction of the pumping station on Roztocká will not be complete, the contractor is now assessing with the designer of the traffic engineering measures how to schedule the remaining works before the end of the year so that the impact on traffic is minimal. The key requirement of the local authorities remains absolute priority for public transport services in a dedicated lane, and directing any necessary remaining restrictions into the autumn half-term, when traffic volumes are lower.

The district's transport councillor put the same point with less diplomacy:

Unfortunately the reconstruction of the pumping station is not complete with this step, and they will want to dig the street up later. For any further follow-up stages that require traffic restrictions on Roztocká, we will demand that they take place during the holidays again, when there is less traffic, and that they include priority measures for public transport.

Why this one is worth noting

Roadworks diversions are not usually news, and a single street closure would not normally be either. What makes this one worth recording is that it is a decision reversed: the utility's programme was set, the extension was requested, and three municipalities acting together got it withdrawn. That is a rarer outcome than the initial announcement.

The rest of the story is a promise rather than a fact. The remaining stages have no dates, only a stated intention to schedule them for the autumn half-term and to keep a dedicated lane for public transport. Both the press statement and Hrubeš describe those as requirements the councils are pressing, not commitments the investor has given. The test of whether the objection worked is not 6 September; it is what appears on Roztocká in the autumn, and whether the bus lane is in it.
